LIFE AFTER WINSTON
Each fall, the Head of School and Winston learning consultants present a program to seventh and eighth grade parents called “Life
after Winston.” The program provides information and guidance on post Winston alternatives in both the private (day and boarding,
co-ed and single sex) and public school environments. The following questions and topics are important guidelines for parents to consider as they navigate the alternatives available to their children.
- Does the school provide a support system for students with learning challenges? What is the scope and breadth of these programs on campus?
- extra help sessions
- tutoring after school
- academic advisors or counselors who have background in working with students with learning difficulties.
- Are computers and assistive technology incorporated into the school’s design for programs?
- Are they available and allowed for computer courses, homework, assignments, and reports?
- Are the majority of teachers open to giving students extra time on tests? What is the stated school policy on this point?
- Can students use calculators in math?
- How do teachers approach study skills and what support and guidance do they give regularly on: assignments, both daily and long-term; study guides for tests.
- Are study skills incorporated across all the disciplines?
- Are the librarians and technology teachers open to helping students navigate the challenges of library and Internet research?
- Is participation in extra-curricular activities dependent on grades and course selections?
- What is the grading policy?
- What are the foreign language requirements for graduation? With this discipline area—as well as other areas (like math), is there flexibility in terms of the school’s requirements for graduation?
- Does the school “track” or are classes grouped heterogeneously? Is there “mainstreaming?”
- How are textbooks selected; what are the various readability levels of the chosen programs as illustrated by the text materials?
- What is the maximum class size of the core courses?
