Chad Spikerman loved his friends and family, his dog Otis, music, the NY Jets and FISHING!! His dream was to move to Florida and start a business called the “Double Rockin’ Inn” with his lifelong friend Dave Walker. He wanted “a boring bed & breakfast converted into a ‘rockin’ college dorm-style bed & breakfast complete with a boat for daily fishing trips!” Sadly, Chad is not here to fulfill this dream, but his family and friends wanted to honor his spirit and love of and respect for marine life. So, without hesitation, Margie Spikerman, Chad’s mother and longtime member of The Winston Board of Trustees, and her husband Richard, thought about The Winston School, where Chad attended school as a young man. With the support of Chad’s friends and extended family, they have partnered with Winston to establish an operating fund, in Chad’s memory, to be used for three main purposes:
- To host an annual fishing trip for the graduating eighth grade class from The Winston School;
- To support programs and trips through the annual “Project Winston” curriculum project that will focus on ocean and wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship;
- To work with students and staff at Winston in promoting an annual donation of time, talent and resources to the many fish and ocean conservation charities that meant so much to Chad.
To date, the Chad Spikerman Fund has supported five annual 8th grade fishing excursions off Long Beach Island; Lower School trips to Sandy Hook State Park and visits to Winston from the Atlantic City Aquarium “touch tank;” and an all-school trip to the New York City Aquarium. Winston staff members are currently planning a full scope of activities in coordination with the school’s “Project Winston” program—all connected to the overall theme of kindness to the oceans and respect for marine life.
