Tribute to Ms. Cerritto

Ms. Terri Cerritto recently announced her retirement effective May 1st after 23 years at Winston. During that time Ms. Cerritto taught Music, Drama, Public Speaking, and most recently was the Director of The Winston Center for Learning. She looks forward to spending her retirement in Florida with her son Justin and husband Richard, traveling and, mostly, to not having to plan at all!

Remote Learning Success Story

When all of this began – the coronavirus, that is – one of my first thoughts was my daughter's education. She attends a specialized school in Short Hills for kids who have language-based learning differences – think dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. But a diagnosed learning disability isn't a requirement for enrolling – elementary or middle school aged children who may need extra support in a particular subject, such as reading or math, or in a particular area, such as executive functioning, attend as well.  Continue Reading

Letter from Dr. Lewis

Dear Winston Community: As recent tragic events have unfolded alongside a seemingly endless onslaught of protests tied to anger and feelings of hopelessness, I write today with a strong community resolve that respect, empathy for others and justice are important concepts for us to embrace and persistently share with our students. Realizing the intensity of protests across our country over the past few days, and acknowledging the important reasons for these protests, we as educators and parents are given the challenge of how to communicate with our students and our children the issues and the actions that pervade our television screens and characterize our community responses. Some responses are peaceful and collaborative—and other responses have turned violent and have been marked by a multitude of frustrated voices and allegiances. Complete Letter

Overcoming Dyslexia Released

Today is a very special day for the dedicated diverse community of dyslexia advocates.

We are pleased to announce the release of the revised, updated and expanded edition of Overcoming Dyslexia. This book brings the reader clear, accessible and helpful 21st century scientific advances in dyslexia and how to use them to advance dyslexic readers and is, at the same time, filled with compassion and empathy.

The book's authors, Dr. Sally Shaywitz and Dr, Jonathan Shaywitz have a special relationship to Winston as former speakers and trainers of our staff. The Winston School has been selected for special praise and inclusion in this current edition in an important section, Choosing A School (Chapter 23, Finding the School For Your Dyslexic Child)

Overcoming Dyslexia is available on Amazon for order now, and for those who prefer to listen rather than read, there is a complete audio version of this new edition read by Dr. Sally Shaywitz.

Please read the complete Press Release HERE

Admissions Update Spring 2020

During our School's closure, we are still actively involved in our admissions' process.  Information from families "in-process" with us is being reviewed. We welcome any new information about potential students, which may be sent electronically to:  Documents such as psycho-educational testing, IEPs, report cards and an application are helpful in determining what resources your child may need.

Our April 2 Open House is cancelled.  We are exploring ways to connect so that families can learn about what Winston has to offer.  Please feel free to email me with any questions and visit the website for updates.  We wish your family continued safety and good health.

Pack the Trunk

The Winston Parent Association is very pleased to share that we are partnering with the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges for a special holiday project. We want to "PACK THE TRUNK" (of a car) with personal items for the IFPO clients. They have requested the following items as a huge need with their clients because none of these are covered by food stamps. On Tuesday, November 26th at drop off, please bring soap, diapers, maxi pads & tampons to school at drop off and we will stuff a trunk (or two!) with items to bring to the IFPO later in the day.

We are really excited to support the curriculum objectives around service that Winston has built in partnership with the IFPO. We are working to creatively incorporate the parents and families in these efforts. Thank you for joining us in these endeavors!

To recap the current adult and family opportunities:

Coat Drive - drop off at school by 3:30 on Friday, November 22. There are boxes at both school entrance doors

Monthly IFPO Parent Volunteers - Signup Genius

PACK THE TRUNK- Bring any/all of the requested items to school on Feast Day, Tuesday November 26 at drop off.  Cars will be in the church's lower parking lot ready to accept donations.
