Private Tutoring

The Winston Center for Learning at The Winston School of Short Hills offers private tutoring for students in grades 1–8. Our highly trained teachers bring extensive classroom experience and specialized expertise to every session, providing personalized instruction tailored to each student’s unique learning needs.
Tutoring is available to both current Winston students and students from other schools, with flexible scheduling and a range of instructional options designed to support academic growth and build confidence.

Tutoring Options Include:

  • Flexible scheduling
  • On-campus, in-home, or virtual instruction (when appropriate)
  • Reading support, including Orton-Gillingham and reading comprehension
  • Math support
  • Test preparation
  • Additional individualized academic support based on each student’s needs

Private Assessments

PAST (Phonological Awareness Screening Test):
The PAST measures a student’s ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken language, which is a critical foundation for reading and spelling. Strong phonological awareness supports accurate decoding, word recognition, and overall literacy development. This assessment helps determine whether students are able to complete sound-based tasks accurately and automatically, since speed and efficiency with these foundational skills directly impact reading fluency.
IMSE Orton-Gillingham Assessment:
IMSE Orton-Gillingham (IMSE OG) is a structured, multisensory approach to literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading. The assessment evaluates spelling and reading skills at the word and sentence levels to identify which phonics concepts and spelling patterns are mastered and which areas would benefit from additional explicit instruction.

Private Therapy

Carrie Beiter OTR and Karen Pazdera SLP provide individualized private therapy services after school and over the summer months at The Winston School of Short Hills. 
Karen, a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist who has over 20 years of experience in both private practice and at the Winston School of Short Hills, evaluates and treats children in the community who struggle with verbal expression, language comprehension and processing, auditory processing and/or memory, phonological awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension, written expression, word retrieval, and articulation/apraxia. Karen has received training in multiple areas including IMSE OG+, Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing, Lindamood Bell LiPS, Lindamood Bell Seeing Stars, Hochman Writing Program, auditory processing, myofunctional therapy, etc. 

Carrie is a pediatric occupational therapist who has over 25 years of experience in both private practice and at The Winston School of Short Hills. She evaluates and treats children with a variety of diagnoses and challenges in the areas of sensory processing, gross and fine motor coordination, graphomotor skills, visual motor integration, visual perception and processing, and reflex integration. Carrie is certified in Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT), administration of the EASI test (Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration), Interactive Metronome (IM), The Listening Program (TLP) and the inTime programs. Carrie is also a Level 1 certified therapist by the American Hippotherapy Association. In addition, she has received training in multiple other areas including Brain Gym, NDT, Zones of Regulation, Handwriting Without Tears, Loops and Other Groups, and craniosacral therapy.
Through their private practices, both Carrie and Karen can provide clients with the necessary paperwork (medical receipts with diagnosis codes and treatment codes) to obtain insurance reimbursement for therapy with “out-of-network providers” for these medical services.
